20 Christmas Berry / Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin' 25-30cm Tall in 9cm pots

 

Photinia, or Christmas berry, is a genus of Asian and North American shrubs, which includes a group of evergreen hybrids grown specifically for their colourful young foliage.

 

Most are forms of the garden hybrid P. x fraseri, with glossy dark green adult foliage, and variable red tinted young leaves, especially as they just unfold. 'Red Robin' is one, a choice form with eye-catching juvenile growth the colour of sealing wax, similar to a pieris. This is sometimes caught by late spring frosts, and some shelter is advisable. Plants enjoy a sunny or partially shaded position in moist but well-drained soil.

    Good healthy plants - one of twenty was rather battered

    All the plants seemed good and well rooted, and looking pretty happy now they're in the ground. It looks like the box may have been stood on end as the plants and straw had shifted so only took up about 80% of the length - one of the plants had snapped so lost all the new growth and so only a couple of leaves left. It does however appear to have survived so I planted it and we shall see.
