Must have cross pollination to produce the best crops but will set a crop on its own. Plant 2 metres apart. It makes a good addition to informal shrub plantings, where is forms a useful backdrop to more showy species. Plants bear attractive, long catkins in spring which are followed in autumn by edible nuts.

To maximise nut production break the side shoots half way along their length in late summer. Then shorten these shoots to 3-4 buds when the catkins are shedding pollen in late winter. Remove up to one third of old overcrowded shoots to the main branches.
