About 3 Fat Pigs

Growing Plants Since 1997 — With a Name You'll Never Forget!

Welcome to 3 Fat Pigs, a Northern Ireland plant nursery and online garden retailer with roots stretching back to 1997.

We're based in Ballywalter, County Down, and have spent nearly three decades growing and selling plants.

From trees and hedging to shrubs, roses and fruit trees, we bring years of practical growing experience to helping customers create gardens they'll love.

But there's one question we're often asked:

Why on earth is a plant nursery called 3 Fat Pigs?

Well, there's a story behind that!

How 3 Fat Pigs Got Its Name

Our horticultural story began in 1997, long before the 3 Fat Pigs name existed.

In 2010, while I was keeping rare-breed pigs on my farm, the name 3 Fat Pigs came about.

It might not be the most obvious name for a business selling plants and trees, but that's part of its charm.

The name reflects a little of our farming background, and it's certainly one that people remember.

While the pigs inspired the name, plants have always been at the heart of the business.

And that's how 3 Fat Pigs became part of our story.

Nearly 30 Years of Growing Experience

We've been growing and selling plants since 1997, gaining hands-on experience through the changing seasons and the many challenges that come with horticulture.

We understand that successful gardening isn't simply about choosing a plant that looks attractive.

It's about finding the right plant for the right place, giving it a good start and allowing it to flourish.

That experience helps shape our approach to the plants we offer and the customers we serve.

Whether you're planting a single tree or planning a large hedge, we want to help you make choices that work for your garden.

Plants for Every Kind of Garden

At 3 Fat Pigs, you'll find a wide selection of plants to bring your outdoor space to life.

Trees to add structure, character and seasonal interest.
Hedging plants for privacy, boundaries and shelter.
Shrubs to bring colour and texture throughout the year.
Fruit trees for the pleasure of growing your own produce.
Roses for their timeless beauty, colour and fragrance.
Climbing plants and other garden favourites to transform walls, fences and borders.

From established gardens to brand-new planting projects, there's always something exciting about choosing what to grow next.

Proudly Rooted in Northern Ireland

Our business is based on the Ards Peninsula in County Down, Northern Ireland.

Having worked with plants for so many years, we appreciate the importance of choosing varieties that suit the conditions they'll be growing in.

Every garden is different, and we believe the best results come from understanding your space and selecting plants accordingly.

Whether you garden in a sheltered town garden, a rural property or an exposed coastal location, thoughtful planting makes all the difference.

A Real Business With Real Roots

Behind the unusual name is a genuine horticultural business with decades of experience.

We're not a business that discovered plants when online shopping became popular.

We were growing and selling plants long before 3 Fat Pigs had a website — and even before it had its name.

Our aim is to combine that experience with the convenience of shopping online, helping customers discover plants for gardens of all shapes and sizes.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Story

From growing plants in 1997 to keeping rare-breed pigs on the farm and creating the 3 Fat Pigs name in 2010, it's certainly been an interesting journey.

But the best part of horticulture remains the same: seeing plants grow and knowing they'll bring enjoyment for years to come.

Thank you for visiting our website and supporting our business.

Here's to many more years of growing!
