A species of spruce native to western North America. It is most commonly found growing along stream sides in mountain valleys. The needles are blue tinted, grey-green. The blue colour is caused by the waxes on needles. The more wax on a needle, the bluer it is. The trees can be green when young and will turn bluer as they get older. The wax can be wiped from the needles by manual handling and by the rain when the plant is young.
It is a medium-sized evergreen tree growing to 15m+ tall, exceptionally to 25m+ tall, and with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 m. The bark is thin and scaly, flaking off in small circular plates. The crown is conic in young trees, becoming cylindric in older trees. The cones are droopy with thin, flexible scales 20-24 mm long, with a wavy margin. They are reddish to violet, maturing pale brown 5-7 months after pollination.
