Rhamnus frangula (commonly referred to as Glossy Buckthorn, Alder Buckthorn, Breaking Buckthorn and Black Dogwood) is a tall deciduous shrub native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

Alder Buckthorn grows to 4 or 5m. It has no thorns. Its branches grow at a narrow angle to the main upright shoot. Yellow-green leaves turn bright yellow in the Autumn. Tiny white flowers just 3-4mm appear in clusters at the ends of the branches. Berries ripen from green to cherry-red. Likes damp acid soils. Absent from Scotland and endangered in N.Ireland. Alder Buckthorn is the food plant of the Brimstone butterfly.

    Unusual and pretty saplings

Posted by Matthew Bradby on 27th Nov 2021

Very strong and healthy looking saplings, an elegant shape with very good roots on them. I have not grown these before so interested to see how they do in various situations when they sprout in spring. I bought them mainly to help diversify a wildlife garden.

    Alder buckthorn for Brimstones

Plants arrived in good condition and were potted up immediately. Plenty of fibrous roots. Looks as though they'll do well.

Good strong plants received early November.

Very pleased with these plants received 2 days ago, and planted yesterday. Excellent fibrous root systems, strong stems. Have high hopes they will reinforce the existing windbreak within a couple of years.
