5 COPPER /PURPLE BEECH - Fagus Sylvatica Atropurpurea
1-2ft Tall In 1L Pots
Often used as a beautiful purple hedge on its own or mixed in with the Green Beech. Beech hedges make effective windbreaks and span the evergreen / deciduous boundary as while they are deciduous, they retain the dead leaves on the branches through the winter until they are pushed off by new shoots in the springtime when grown as a hedge.
Leaves can be greener in the spring when the first foliage emerges but will turn purple within a few weeks and then turn copper brown for the winter. These leaves are retained by the plant until spring when the new leaves grow resulting in a hedge that is never bare. The hedge can be trimmed into any shape or size and will tolerate most conditions including shade and exposed areas.
Beech can grow about 30-45cm per year when properly established and should be pruned once per year in late summer and it will help the plants to retain the leaves during the winter months. You could also prune it twice per year, commencing the first prune around late May if a more uniformed look is desired.
As the purple beech originates from the green beech it can also happen that a few plants could turn green - sometimes even after a few years of being planted. This is a natural occurrence, and it is therefore beneficial to purchase a few extra plants in case some will need replaced after original planting.
Beech can be planted as a single specimen tree which will grow to a maximum height of 30 metres, but it will shed its leaves in Autumn. It prefers humus rich soils that are well drained. It will not tolerate any waterlogged sites and it should be kept moist during the establishment period.
