Betula pubescens (Downy Birch; also known as White Birch, European White Birch or Hairy Birch) is a species of birch, native and abundant throughout northern Europe, Iceland, northern Asia and also Greenland.
It is a deciduous tree growing to 10-20 m tall. In spring, the male catkins turn yellow and shed their pollen to the green female catkins on the same tree. Leaves are ovate, more rounded at the base than silver birch leaves. Leaf stalks are usually downy, as opposed to hairless on Silver Birch.
