The evergreen hart's tongue fern, Asplenium scolopendrium, grows wild in regions that receive little light. It frequently forms vast drifts amid rocks and streams beneath trees, where its upright, pointed 'tongues' stand out sharply against the softer shapes of wild flowers that prefer moisture. In addition to being excellent for shady natural areas in gardens, the plants are also a great way to add year-round interest to shrubs or other perennials that prefer shade and moisture.
Asplenium scolopendrium grows slowly after planting and requires little care other than yearly mulching and springtime tidying up.
Grows well in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Bright mid-day sun can cause damage.
