B. nigra is a bushy deciduous tree, with shaggy, ruffled, peeling cinnamon coloured bark, which becomes black or grey-white on older trees. It has diamond shaped, glossy dark green leaves that turn yellow in autumn and an abundance of long golden catkins in early spring.
Betula can be deciduous trees or shrubs. They usually colour well in autumn and often with striking pink, white or peeling brown bark. Separate male and female catkins open before or with the leaves in spring
