Product Description

30 Hazel / Corylus Avellana -  Plants 40-60cm Bare-Rooted 1-2ft

These are BARE ROOTED plants which can be planted from the end of October until April and will be dispatched as soon as the weather turns cold and they become dormant. The dispatch date depends on the Autumn temperature and varies from year to year.

Hazel makes a very good thick hedge,it can be layed or coppiced and will come again very quickly with lots of shoots. The plants have large oval leaves in spring followed by lots of hazel nuts in autumn and then long yellow catkins in winter.

Often grown as a large, multi-stemmed shrub rather than a tree, the common hazel has large, rounded, leathery leaves. It makes a good addition to informal shrub plantings, where is forms a useful backdrop to more showy species. Plants bear attractive, long catkins in spring which are followed in autumn by edible nuts. It responds well to coppicing and the resulting straight stems can be woven into screens and rustic plant supports. It dislikes shallow soil which quickly dries out in summer.

Hazel is used to make walking sticks or garden poles and can be made into hurdles. The hedge can be trimmed into any shape or size and will tolerate most conditions including shade and exposed areas. Great food for squirrels
