The Nottingham Frühe hazel (Corylus avellana 'Nottingham Frühe', sometimes called Early Nottingham) is a deciduous hazel cultivar grown for its attractive appearance and reliable crop of sweet edible nuts. It originated in Nottinghamshire, England, and is closely related to the old 'Nottingham' and 'Nottingham Prolific' varieties
- Size: Usually grows as a large shrub or a small tree, reaching about 3–5 metres (10–16 feet) in height, with a broad, spreading crown.
- Leaves: Rounded to oval leaves with serrated edges and a soft, slightly hairy texture. The foliage is bright green during spring and summer and turns pale yellow in autumn.
- Bark: Smooth, brownish-grey bark on young branches, becoming more textured with age.
- Flowers: Long, pendulous yellow catkins appear during late winter or early spring. Tiny red female flowers emerge at the same time.
- Fruit: Produces relatively large, well-filled hazelnuts with an excellent flavour. The nuts ripen earlier than many other cultivars, which explains the name Frühe ("early" in German).
- Growing conditions: Prefers full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Like most hazels, it produces a heavier crop when planted near another hazel variety for pollination.
The tree is valued both as an ornamental plant, thanks to its attractive catkins and rounded shape, and as a productive nut-bearing tree suitable for gardens, orchards, and hedgerows
