Privet can be grown as a small formal hedge or a large hedge. It is evergreen/semi-evergreen (can lose foliage when transplanted in Winter) and can provide excellent shelter and privacy.
The denseness provides an ideal nesting site for small birds. A hedge will grow quite quickly up to about 8-10ft(2.5-3m). For a neat looking it can be clipped twice a year. It will tolerate most conditions including shade and exposed areas. Cut the hedge back to 30cm at planting and prune hard in the first 2 years.
The plants have been grown in the nursery for 3 years and will have an excellent root system ready for planting. Plant 15-45cm(6-18 inches) apart depending on how thick you want your hedge to be.
