Your Health, Your Way!

Urtica dioica is a dioecious herbaceous perennial 1 to 2 m (3 to 7 ft) tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter. It is characteristic of damp, nutrient-rich soils, but can colonise a wide range of other habitats. It is used for food, fibre and it is most popular in medicine.

Nettles contain antihistamines which act against the body’s natural response to produce nasal congestion and watery eye in response to pollen and other allergens. Nettles ease any allergy symptoms, particularly hay fever.

Seeds & leaves of Nettle are also being used to treat arthralgia, colds and flu, diabetes, joint pain, cancers, hypertension and liver diseases.

Drinking a nettle tea can help in treatment of bladder infection –cystitis and flushes the body of infection causing bacteria in bladder or in urethra. In combination with other herbs such as Prunus africanum /red stinkwood and Serenoa repens /saw palmetto, the combined effect is said to ease inflammation and swelling in chronic cases of prostatitis also know as prostate inflammation. It is also said to relieve cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or the enlargement of the prostate gland. Nettle works with these herbs by enhancing their ability to ease symptoms as well as slow the progression of BPH.

It is widely used in modern kitchen as well. You can prepare your own tea, numerous salads, soups and as I do not forget, it is also used for a Nettle Beer very often made and distributed in America.
