Supplied in 1L Pot
Rhododendron 'Mother's Day' (Kurume) is a compact Kurume azalea, a group of evergreen azaleas bred in Japan and prized for their dense habit and prolific spring flowering. It is one of the most reliable small azaleas for gardens in the UK and Ireland.
Mature Size
- Height: 0.6–0.9 metres
- Spread: 0.9–1.2 metres
It naturally forms a dense, rounded mound and usually remains wider than tall.
Flowers
- Masses of bright rose-pink to deep pink flowers.
- Small funnel-shaped blooms borne so densely that they can almost hide the foliage.
- Flowers in late April to May.
- One of the showiest spring-flowering azaleas for its size.
Foliage
- Evergreen.
- Small, glossy, dark green leaves.
- May develop bronze or reddish tints during winter.
Growing Conditions
Position
- Partial shade or dappled shade is ideal.
- Performs well in morning sun with afternoon shade.
- In Northern Ireland's cooler climate, it can tolerate more sun if the soil remains moist.
Soil
- Acidic (ericaceous) soil.
- Moist but free-draining.
- Rich in organic matter.
Water
- Water regularly during dry spells.
- Mulch annually with pine bark, leaf mould, or composted bark.
Hardiness
- Fully hardy in most of the UK and Ireland.
- Typically hardy to around −15°C to −20°C once established.
Pruning
- Usually requires very little pruning.
- If needed, trim lightly immediately after flowering.
- Avoid hard pruning into old wood.
Garden Uses
- Front of borders
- Woodland gardens
- Japanese gardens
- Rock gardens
- Container growing in ericaceous compost
- Mass planting for spring colour
